Create space for young children to communicate through play, colour, texture, and making. Therapedia Centre plans art therapy programs with daycare teams in Toronto and the GTA.
EARLY YEARS SUPPORT
Preschool children often communicate experience through action, play, images, and sensory exploration before they can explain it in words. A carefully paced art therapy program can offer another route for noticing feelings, practising regulation, and building connection.
We begin by listening to educators and clarifying the developmental range, routines, environment, and reasons for seeking support. The proposed format is adapted to attention span, sensory needs, transitions, and the practical rhythm of the centre. Art therapy is not an assessment of talent and is not the same as a craft activity led toward a fixed final product.
Session length, instructions, and choice are adapted to the age and developmental range of participants.
Timing is coordinated with the centre to reduce disruption around meals, rest, arrivals, and departures.
Materials, supervision, accessibility, cleanup, and the working area are discussed in advance.
Consent and appropriate communication with parents or caregivers are built into program planning.
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
Give children choices for showing experiences that they cannot yet name clearly.
Use rhythm, repetition, sensory awareness, and co-regulation within a supported process.
Create a predictable place to explore separation, new routines, family changes, or loss.
Practise choice, shared attention, boundaries, and safe connection with an adult and peers.
A THOUGHTFUL EARLY YEARS PARTNER
Therapedia Centre’s art therapy work is delivered by professionals with specialized training in art therapy and psychotherapy. The therapeutic plan is shaped around the children, not around producing identical artwork.

We coordinate with the daycare about purpose, participation, consent, privacy, routines, and the centre’s existing procedures. A proposed program complements the care environment and does not replace medical, developmental, or emergency assessment.
We learn about the children, age range, routines, priorities, space, and staff observations.
We clarify the therapeutic purpose, participation, scheduling, materials, consent, and communication.
The therapist delivers the agreed program and reviews observations and next steps within privacy boundaries.
Share your centre’s goals, age group, schedule, and practical questions. We can discuss whether an art therapy program is a good fit.
Arts and crafts usually teach a technique or work toward a planned product. Art therapy uses the creative process within a therapeutic relationship to support expression, regulation, and meaning. There is no requirement to make something that looks a certain way.
Suitability depends on the children’s developmental level, needs, group context, and program goals rather than age alone. Therapedia discusses the age range and recommended format with the centre before confirming a proposal.
Participation should be responsive rather than forced. A therapist may offer observation, simple choices, movement, or another developmentally appropriate way to engage while respecting the child’s cues and the agreed program boundaries.
The daycare and therapist clarify consent and communication before the program starts. The appropriate level of caregiver involvement depends on the format, age of the children, privacy considerations, and the purpose of the service.
This program should not be presented as a stand-alone diagnostic assessment. If educators or caregivers have developmental, medical, or safety concerns, they should use the appropriate assessment and referral pathways.
