SUPPORT FOR GROWING MINDS

Children Often Communicate Through Feelings and Behaviour

Children may not always have the words to explain anxiety, sadness, frustration, fear, or confusion. Their emotions may instead appear through withdrawal, outbursts, sleep difficulties, school avoidance, physical complaints, or changes in behaviour.

Child psychotherapy gives children a safe and supportive place to express what they are experiencing, understand their emotions, and build practical skills for everyday life.

SUPPORT FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Helping the Whole Family Move Forward

Parents and caregivers are important partners in child psychotherapy. Depending on your child’s age, developmental stage, and individual needs, you may participate in consultations, selected therapy sessions, or separate parent-support meetings. A child psychotherapist in Toronto can help you better understand your child’s emotions and behaviour, respond to difficult moments more effectively, create supportive routines and boundaries, reinforce emotional regulation and coping skills at home, and improve family communication. Confidentiality is explained clearly at the beginning of therapy, allowing parents to remain appropriately informed while providing children with a safe, trusting space to express themselves and receive personalized children’s mental health support.

YOUR FIRST PSYCHOTHERAPY SESSION

What to Expect in Your First Psychotherapy Session

Your child’s first psychotherapy session is a gentle, welcoming introduction designed to help the therapist understand your child’s needs, strengths, personality, and current challenges. At Therapedia Centre, our Child Psychotherapy Services in Toronto support children experiencing anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, ADHD, autism-related concerns, behavioural challenges, low self-esteem, grief, trauma, school stress, family changes, and friendship difficulties.

The first appointment often begins with a parent or caregiver consultation. You can share relevant information about your child’s development, routines, relationships, school experience, and the changes you have noticed. Depending on your child’s age and comfort level, they may then meet the child psychotherapist through conversation, play, art, storytelling, or other age-appropriate activities. There is no pressure to discuss everything immediately; the priority is creating safety, trust, and a positive connection.

After the initial session, the therapist will explain possible goals and recommend a personalized treatment approach. Child counselling may focus on emotional awareness, coping skills, confidence, communication, social skills, and healthier responses to stress. Parents remain appropriately involved while the child’s privacy is respected. We offer in-person child therapy in Toronto and virtual psychotherapy across Ontario, helping families access compassionate, evidence-informed children’s mental health support when appropriate for the child and family.

Questions About Child Psychotherapy

Therapy may be helpful when emotional, behavioural, social, or school-related challenges continue over time or interfere with your child’s daily life. You do not need to wait until a problem becomes severe before seeking support.

Sessions may include talking, play, games, art, stories, mindfulness exercises, or skill-building activities. The therapist chooses methods appropriate for your child’s age and needs.

Parent involvement varies depending on the child’s age, concerns, and therapy goals. Caregivers may participate in consultations, family sessions, or periodic progress discussions.

Children need privacy to build trust with their therapist. However, parents are kept appropriately informed, and confidentiality may be limited when there is a concern about safety.

Therapists begin slowly and focus on building comfort and trust. Children are not expected to discuss difficult experiences before they feel ready.

The length of therapy depends on your child’s concerns, goals, response to treatment, and family circumstances. Progress is reviewed regularly.

Psychotherapy may support emotional regulation, self-esteem, anxiety, communication, routines, relationships, and coping skills. Therapy does not aim to change a child’s identity or natural neurological differences.

Online therapy may work well for some older children, while younger children may benefit more from in-person sessions. The therapist can recommend the most appropriate format.
